Along with the spine we have down our backs we also have one in our shoulder blade.
You work on this area by locating the spine which is in the upper half of the shoulder blade and firmly squeeze it between your fingers and thumb.
Kneading the neck is simple grasp the muscles at the base of the neck and squeeze along them with your fingers and thumb. Then knead the neck thoroughly working the whole area.
Now moving on to the lower back area, with alternate hands circle around the sacrum and lumbar spine using flat kneading strokes. Cover the whole area.
The strokes used on the spine are the rocking horse which is a broad stroke, a deep friction stroke which eases tension around the vertebrae; and finally a connecting stroke which brings a feeling of wholeness to the entire back.
The rocking horse stroke is simple; rest one hand on top of the other and glide them up from the base of the spine to the neck. Then using only your index and middle fingertips place them on either side of the spine place your other hand in same position only behind the first one. Softly glide your fingertips down the whole spine.
Creating friction along the spine eases tension along the spine and around the vertebrae. Make short deep circles with your thumbs up either side of the spine, then before you work back down again press them briefly into the hollows at the base of the skull.
Forearm pressure is where you place your forearms in the center of your partners back slowly pull your forearms apart bringing one up to the base of the neck and the other to the base of the spine. Repeat diagonally across the back so that one arm goes over one shoulder and the other goes across the opposite buttock.
To end your massage on the back of the body end with the legs and feet, by doing this you help your partner feel more grounded and stable. The back fleshy areas of the legs are ideal for kneading and wringing. If this area is especially sensitive or painful they may be suffering from lower back pain.
Cupped hand stroke is where you cup your hands over the back of the ankle with left hand over the right if your working on the left leg and vice Vera. Glide both hands up the middle and back of the leg. When you near the top allow the leading hand to go up over the buttock and around the hip joint while the other moves around to the inside of the thigh. Be sure that your movements are okay with your client before preforming this stroke. Glide both hands down the side of the leg and off of the foot.
Strokes that drain the leg work with the circulation, assisting the flow of blood back to the heart. Sitting either at the foot or by the side of the leg begin working up from the ankle first with your thumbs then with the heel of your hand. when you get to the back of the knee use lighter and broader strokes so that you don't push the kneecap against the surface that your client is lying on.
Work down the leg by kneading it after you thoroughly massage the leg wring out the leg by starting at the lower half and working your way up and down the leg keeping your pressure even.
